Greens, Infrastructure Victoria Urge Upfield Line Duplication

Australian Greens

The Greens are calling on the Labor Government to take the recommendations from Infrastructure Victoria and duplicate the Upfield train line.

Duplication would cost the government just over $245 million according to the Parliamentary Budget Office, the approximate cost of a level crossing removal.

It comes after Infrastructure Victoria released their transport strategy pitch to the government for the next 30 years.

The Upfield train line has some of the longest wait times of any of Melbourne's major lines. Leaving passengers to wait for 20 minutes or more if they miss a train.

Infrequent and unreliable trains are a huge barrier for people wanting to make the switch from driving to public transport.

With the Brunswick level crossing removal project set to begin, and the Labor Government's new activity centre plans driving population growth in the inner north, The Greens say it's time to update the frequency of the Upfield line.

As stated by Member for Brunswick, Tim Read:

"In 2025, it's an outrage that people in Brunswick and Coburg don't have reliable, affordable and accessible transport yet we have one of the slowest tram services on Sydney Road and some of the longest wait times of Melbourne's train lines.

"For the price of a level crossing removal, the Government could take Infrastructure Victoria's recommendation and rapidly improve the commute for people living in Brunswick.

"The Greens and the community have been calling for this upgrade for decades, it's time Labor listened."
