A man has suffered a serious facial injury after allegedly being assaulted with a wine glass at a restaurant in Cairns overnight.

Preliminary investigations suggest two men who were attending celebrations at the Florence Street business became involved in a verbal altercation around 10pm.

It is then alleged one of the pair, a 43-year-old man, picked up a glass and broke it over the face of a 37-year-old man before leaving the scene.

The victim sustained deep lacerations as a result and self-presented at Cairns Base Hospital where he is expected to undergo surgery.

A 43-year-old man who later attended hospital with minor injuries is assisting police with inquiries.
