Griffith Regional Art Gallery is proud to present its next exhibition, Neridah Stockley: A Secular View, opening Friday 19 March 2021.
A Secular View is an exhibition spanning 25 years of arts practice by Northern Territory-based artist Neridah Stockley and is curated by Gillean Shaw, Art Curator at the University of Newcastle Art Gallery.
Although Stockley is best known as a painter, this exhibition reveals the diversity of her practice including drawings, collage, dry point etchings and ceramic work.
Art Gallery Coordinator Ray Wholohan said through numerous en plein air encounters Stockley creates a personal record that is later reworked and resolved in the studio.
"This relationship to space and returning to place was etched in the artist's mind travelling regional NSW as a child, and later between Central Australia and NSW," said Mr Wholohan.
"Stockley's work is characterised by abstracted compositions that hint at narrative or symbolic content, crossing between memory and experience and how that is interpreted visually.
"While the works are small in scale, she invites the viewer to observe the landscape in a deconstructed fashion, through a process of re-visioning the natural and manufactured world into linear and geometric planes and forms, which are then displayed through her art," he added.
To coincide with this exhibition the Art Gallery is hosting a number of public programs including the exhibition opening at 6pm on Friday 19 March. The artist herself, Neridah Stockley will present an artist's floor talk on Saturday 20 March at 11am. Morning tea will be provided.
