Griffith residents urged to book in for their Covid vaccine

Griffith City Council Mayor, John Dal Broi is urging residents to get vaccinated and play their part in the nation's COVID-19 recovery.

Councillor Dal Broi, who will receive his second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine this week, said the slow take up of the vaccine in our region was a worry.

"It's vital that we have as many people as possible in our City and right across the country vaccinated," said Councillor Dal Broi.

"We have been extremely fortunate not to have had any new cases here in Griffith since the very beginning of the pandemic, but we need to continue to adhere to the lockdown and restrictions and only leave your home if you absolutely have to."

As at 27 August 2021, of the 21,512 Griffith residents aged 15 years and over, 57.7 precent had received their first dose, while 35.1 percent their second.

Councillor Dal Broi praised those who had already lined up for their jabs.

"Our best defence against the virus, and further lockdowns, is more people getting the vaccine," he said.

Initial calculations received from the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) shows, 61 percent of the whole MLHD population, or nearly 150,000 people, have currently received their first dose.

"We need all those people who are eligible to be vaccinated to book in as soon as possible," Councillor Dal Broi said.

"We have been told that for us to live in the region with Delta, we need close to 190,000 - 200,000 people vaccinated. Working toward this number is the highest priority we have and I urge Griffith to help bolster those numbers."
