Greyhound Racing NSW today welcomed the NSW Government funding announcement which will ensure greyhound racing can return to Gunnedah.
GRNSW CEO Tony Mestrov said it had worked closely with the NSW Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association to secure the $480,000 grant from the Government.
"The funding will ensure work can commence remediating the track which was closed after sustained water damage," he said.
Mr Mestrov said GRNSW will be calling for tenders as soon as possible to get the work underway – this will include work for local contractors.
"This project will ensure that greyhound racing can grow as a sport in the Gunnedah region," he said.
"The track upgrade will also ensure that greyhound racing can continue safely – the welfare of dogs is a high priority for GRNSW."
Mr Mestrov said this is the second track upgrade announced as part of a five-year program to improve track safety and the welfare of dogs.
The first project under the program, an upgrade of Gosford greyhound track, was announced earlier this month.
Mr Mestrov said GRNSW is developing design standards for its tracks based on research by the University of Technology, Sydney.
Further funding from the $30 million package will be announced during the year. ---
