Guide to Wollongong NYE Fireworks

It has been a long year for our residents, and we know that many of us are looking forward to a low-key NYE celebration with our friends and loved ones.

Acorn Lawyers' NYE Fireworks presented by Wollongong City Council will kick-off at 9pm with a fireworks display over the Wollongong Harbour as prepare to welcome in the new year.

This year we've asked for the fireworks to be fired up higher into the night sky so that people can spread out a little more along Belmore Basin, North Wollongong and within the CBD.

"We know our community is very excited to celebrate the New Year with their friends, family and community. Council's focus this New Year's Eve is on supporting our residents to celebrate and have fun in a COVID-19 safe way," Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

We've made the decision to prioritise safety by not hosting market stalls, food vans or amusement rides. Instead we're encouraging people to make the most of the fantastic local business offerings around Wollongong or even celebrate with your loved ones at home.

There will also be no music broadcast on ground at the Harbour, instead people watching the fireworks are encouraged to switch on your radio wherever you are and tune into i98FM to listen to the soundtrack.

"For those visiting Belmore Basin, we're planning to project images on the Wollongong Flagstaff Hill Lighthouse from 8.30 to 10.30pm. The images will be put into a 5-minute slideshow and displayed on loop for passers-by to enjoy," Cr Bradbery said.

"This New Year's Eve will be a quiet, local affair for many of our community members. Here in Wollongong, we have some fantastic local businesses, restaurants, bars and eateries.

"Our residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to food, music and entertainment. This NYE is no exception as there will be a lot happening at different venues around the city for people to enjoy in a COVID-safe way.

"If you do decide to watch the fireworks at 9pm at Wollongong Harbour with your friends and family, make sure you do so safely and be mindful of others. Our NYE Fireworks are alcohol-free and family friendly."

Wollongong CBD Restaurants, Bars and Eateries that are celebrating NYE

Wollongong is becoming known for our fantastic foodie and entertainment culture with to-die-for local eats, great live music venues and unique local bars popping up around the city. A number of businesses are holding NYE events or are offering a window seat for visitors to view the fireworks.
