Gutwein fails to show leadership on Launceston gun crime

  • Another shooting in Launceston's series of serious crime incidents
  • Gutwein must take a stand to protect those in his own backyard
  • Locals do not feel safe
  • Another shooting in Launceston overnight is the latest in a series of serious crime incidents involving firearms in the state's north.

Shadow Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management Jen Butler said Peter Gutwein is not up to the task of keeping our communities safe.

"Despite repeated claims that ongoing gun crimes create no risk to the general public, people in the Launceston community don't feel safe," Ms Butler said

"The government must step up and show leadership. It is inexcusable that Peter Gutwein has remained silent while a series of gun related crimes have unfolded in his own backyard.

"Clearly there is a gun problem in Launceston and the community deserves to know whose hands these firearms are in and how they've got there.

"Launceston's police and emergency services continue to work under extreme pressure and must be better supported - especially considering serious crime rates continue to escalate on the Liberal government's watch.

"Tasmanians deserve to feel safe. The government must show leadership and act on Launceston's serious crime spike."
