Griffith City Council has endorsed a comprehensive Master Plan for Hanwood, setting the stage for 803 new houses to be built over the next 25 to 30 years.
The Master Plan provides a clear and sustainable framework for housing growth in Hanwood, delivering new homes, community spaces and essential infrastructure for current and future residents.
The plan was publicly exhibited from 30 May to 27 June 2025, during which Council received seven submissions. All submissions have been reviewed and no changes to the Master Plan were required.
The Hanwood Growth Area forms part of Griffith's broader housing strategy, which also includes Lake Wyangan, Yenda and undeveloped land in Collina, offering the potential for more than 3,500 new homes to meet the city's long-term growth needs.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said the endorsement of the Master Plan sets a strong foundation for Hanwood's future development.
"The plan is based on strategic documents completed by our staff in consultation with our community. It responds directly to the needs of the community and provides a clear, sustainable pathway for growth," he said.
Development will occur in three stages, offering a mix of conventional lots, large lot residential land and multi-dwelling housing. The plan addresses site constraints including drainage, flat topography and surrounding irrigation infrastructure through considered design and upgraded road connections to improve safety and connectivity.
Next steps include the development of a Section 7.11 Contribution Plan for the Hanwood growth area, detailed design of main roads, drainage networks and precinct parks to guide the staged release of land in line with Council's planning controls and the Local Environmental Plan 2014.
