The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Georges River Council to name a reserve in the suburb of Oatley as Arthur Hardiman Reserve.

Acting Chair of the Geographical Names Board Thomas Grinter said it was important place names reflected the character and history of the local area and community.

"We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name," Mr Grinter said.

Mr Hardiman served nine consecutive terms worth 27 years from 1956 until 1983 on Kogarah Council, including as Mayor and Deputy Mayor. In 2003 he was awarded the Centenary Medal for service to Local Government.

He gave more than 50 years of continuous service to the Oatley Uniting Church as a member of the Property Committee, leader of the Youth Club, as the Church's first Chairman, an Elder and as the Church's Chief Steward.

Mr Hardiman was a veteran of World War II, serving overseas with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He enlisted on 9 January 1941, aged 21 and was discharged on 7 March 1946 with the rank of Corporal.

The nomination of his name for this reserve was formally endorsed by the RSL at the Georges River Council Meeting on 28 February 2022.

GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name.

Suggestions for alternative names are not being sought at this time.

Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website: https://www.gnb.nsw.gov.au/.

Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
