The NSW Government is calling on the community to have their say on the Wilton Town Centre Precinct rezoning proposal that features new homes, a large-scale shopping and business precinct, a new school, new paths for pedestrians and cyclists and the protection of 39 hectares of pristine bush land delivered by 2040.
The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s Deputy Secretary Brett Whitworth said Wilton will develop a strong presence in Sydney’s south-west over the coming decades and will become a focal point in the Western Parkland City.
“The draft plan for the Wilton Town Centre Precinct, balances protection and conservation of the natural environment while providing services for the broader Wollondilly area.” Mr Whitworth said.
“The nature corridor along Byrne’s Creek will form a green spine that connects urban development to the town’s unique landscape and will protect habitat for threatened species, including koalas.”
Mr Whitworth added that the recently released draft Cumberland Plain Conservation Plan (CPCP) – based on the latest scientific advice to improve the resilience and long-term survival of koalas helped inform the proposal.
“The draft CPCP will run concurrently with land use and infrastructure planning and precinct rezoning. It will seek to balance biodiversity impacts in the biocertified areas through a range of conservation measures.”
A Special Infrastructure Contribution (SIC) fund is also being finalised to ensure that new development is supported by the right infrastructure as the community grows.
The draft planning package that will be staged over the next 20 years has been prepared in collaboration with Wollondilly Shire Council. Key features include:
- A large-scale shopping and business precinct catering for some 4,700 new local jobs;
- A new K-12 school;
- 1,600 new homes in the Wilton Town Centre Precinct;
- New paths for pedestrians and cyclists; and
- The protection of 39 hectares of pristine bush land.
