The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting a small hazard reduction burn today (Friday 16 April) in Wogamia Nature Reserve west of Nowra.
NPWS South Coast Branch Director Kane Weeks said the strategic 7-hectare burn was lit late this morning.
"The burn is in a strategic location to the north west of the Nature Reserve and will help protect both visitors to the reserve and limit the potential spread of wildfire to surrounding private properties," said Mr Weeks.
"While the wet weather this season has delayed some hazard reduction burning, we are taking advantage of favourable conditions today to conduct the burn.
"Depending on conditions, smoke may be visible from neighbouring private properties and to motorists along Mopoke Close, Binnaburra Park Road and Longreach Road.
"We thank our neighbours and visitors to the region for their understanding," said Mr Weeks.
This burn is one of many NPWS is planning to carry out across the NSW south coast region this autumn, and an example of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year.
People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory conditions are advised to keep clear of the nature reserve or stay indoors.
