Heavy vehicle inspections across Southern Region, NSW

Police inspected 1385 heavy vehicles during a three day operation in the Southern Region this week, targeting dangerous driving and unsafe work practices in the heavy vehicle industry, NSW Police say.

Between Tuesday (12 September 2017) and Thursday yesterday officers from the Joint Traffic Task Force targeted heavy vehicles in the Southern Region as part of ongoing operations aimed at taking dangerous vehicles off the road.

During the operation, officers from Southern Region Traffic & Highway Patrol Command working the Joint Traffic Task Force and Roads and Maritime Inspectors, intercepted heavy vehicles on the Newell Highway at West Wyalong, the Sturt Highway at Hay, and surrounding areas.

The operation resulted in 1385 heavy vehicles being inspected, where;

- 161 electronic speed limiter downloads were conducted, with 12 found to be non-compliant.

- 77 infringements were issued for speeding,

- 260 other infringements were issued,

- 55 charges were laid for a variety of traffic offences,

- 29 defect notices were issued for a variety of defects, and

- Eight drivers tested positive for drugs following a roadside drug test.

Acting Assistant Commissioner David Driver of the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command, said heavy vehicle operations are run to ensure the safety of all road users.

"This weeks inspections were part of an ongoing operation across the state, aimed at keeping unsafe trucks and drivers off our roads.

"We will continue to work with Roads and Maritime and inspectors to inspect trucks that are on our roads and issue defect notices and infringements to any owner or operator that is using an unsafe truck or dangerous driver.

"In three days, we issued more than 300 infringements and handed out 29 defect notices for trucks that are not roadworthy.

"This indicates that there is still too many dangerous trucks on our roads and we are not going to stop until they are all off the road," Acting Assistant Commissioner Driver said.
