Helen Shield appointed as Senior Policy and Communications Advisor

Highly renowned senior journalist, Helen Shield, has been appointed Senior Policy and Communications Advisor with the Property Council of Australia, WA Division.

Ms Shield has more than 20 years' experience working for daily metropolitan newspapers as a writer, section editor, production editor and sub-editor, including at The Age, The Courier Mail, The Herald Sun and The West Australian.

Joining the Property Council from her most recent position as Commercial Property Editor of The West Australian newspaper, which she has held since May 2016, Ms Shield has forged a reputation as a powerful communicator and industry expert. At The West Australian she created a lively and well-read commercial property section with breaking news and analysis of the bigger-picture issues experienced by a range of property industry participants.

Property Council WA Executive Director Sandra Brewer said Ms Shield had demonstrated her excellent communication skills throughout an exemplary career as a journalist and that she was very well equipped to help promote a vision of well-designed, vibrant, compelling cities and communities.

"Helen Shield is highly regarded across the property industry for her detailed knowledge and proficiency in reporting on matters that are important to the industry," Ms Brewer said.

"Helen has an in-depth understanding of many of the opportunities and challenges facing this important sector of the WA economy, which is this state's largest employer and second biggest industry behind mining.

"Helen also enjoys warm relationships across the property sector and will be a wonderful addition to our WA team, working with Deputy Executive Director Michael Britton to advance our advocacy priorities and to lead effective communications strategies.

"Our vision for the Property Council is to be positive advocates for changes in policy settings that will enable a prosperous future for WA, creating jobs, thriving communities and delivering affordable housing. I know Helen Shield shares this vision and our Division Councillors and the broader Property Council team look forward to working with her."

Ms Shield commences her role in June.
