Helensburgh Pool Refurbishment Update

The Helensburgh Pool refurbishment is edging closer to completion as Council makes every effort to ensure the new-look facility is open before the end of summer.

Much like the local community, we were very excited to open the refurbished pool in mid-January and allow families in Helensburgh and surrounding suburbs to enjoy the new-look facility at the height of summer.

Unfortunately, a delay in the arrival of tiles essential to the pool refurbishment will push the much-anticipated opening date back to mid-to-late February 2026. This supply issue has now been resolved and tiling is underway, however, the unforeseen delay in the arrival of tiles has necessitated an extension in the timeline of works.

Apart from this supply issue outside of Council's control, the works have been progressing well and we can assure the community that we have consulted extensively with our contractor to explore all options to hasten the completion of works. We will continue to do so in an effort to bring the opening date forward if possible.

We understand this will be disappointing for local residents keen to enjoy the remainder of the swim season in the newly refurbished pool. Providing that opportunity remains Council's priority, and we appreciate the patience of the community as we look to deliver the facility as soon as possible.

While project delays can be frustrating, particularly amid the recent heatwave, it important to ensure that works are carried out in full to ensure the pool is able meet the needs of the community, not just in the immediate term, but for the next several decades.

"We know it's not what the community wanted to hear, and it's not news we wanted to deliver," Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.

"We've looked at every option we can to claw back time following the delay in tiles arriving, but our top priority is ensuring we do ultimately deliver a facility that is reliable and fit for purpose in 20 years' time and beyond.

"The frustration this will cause is understandable, but we don't want to compromise any aspect of the overall works to save a relatively short period of time in the final stretch of the project. We appreciate the community bearing with us and enduring some short-term pain for a long-term gain.

"We look forward to re-opening the pool for the community to enjoy the remainder of the swim season."
