Helensburgh Pool Set for February Reopening

Wollongong City Council is putting the finishing touches on a major refurbishment of Helensburgh Pool ahead of the keenly anticipated re-opening before the end of February.

With tiling now completed, the toddler pool has been filled, and the main pool is set to begin filling this Sunday. Final pool and plantroom testing will take place next week.

Works carried out during the course of this project include a complete refurbishment of the 25m and toddler pools, as well as the male, female and accessible amenities.

It also saw the construction of the first ever public Changing Places amenities in Helensburgh to provide for people with high support needs making it a more accessible experience for all members of the community visiting the pool, attending local cultural and sporting events, or having a picnic in the park.

In addition to the remediation, re-painting and re-tiling of both pools, works have included:

  • Resurfacing of the pool concourse.
  • Refurbishment the existing pool plant room and replacement of ageing equipment.
  • Installation of high-quality HDPE monofilament shade sail for high UV resistance and long life.
  • Installation of new handrails, seating, shade and bike racks.
  • Accessibility upgrades to shaded seating and picnic areas.
  • Improvements to pool concourse lighting.
  • Accessible parking and pathway connections to the facility.
  • Renewed lifeguard room.

"We are absolutely delighted to be able to re-open the pool before the end of summer for the community to enjoy the remainder of the swim season," Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.

"We obviously had to overcome some hurdles late in the timeline, but our top priority was always ensuring we ultimately delivered a high-quality facility that is reliable, accessible, and fit for purpose over the next several decades.

"The pool's a much-loved community facility and we're grateful for the patience of our residents as we've completed these works, and for their valuable input into the project from the planning stage right up to the re-opening.

"It will be great to see local families enjoy a splash before summer's out."

The works on the pool are supported by grant funding from the NSW Government's Multi Sport Community Facility Fund.
