Help Clean Up Australia this Sunday

Step up to clean up with Townsville City Council this Clean Up Australia Day.

Council is hosting a free community event at Bushland Beach Park for locals to help enhance the natural environment this Sunday 05 March 2023.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said Clean Up Australia Day created a marked improvement on Townsville's natural surrounds.

"Last year Council hosted a Clean Up Australia Day event at Sherriff Park, Mundingburra, and with the power of 200 volunteers we were able to collect 218kg of waste from the Ross River area," Cr Soars said.

"Clean Up Australia Day is a catalyst to step up and clean up your local park, creek, or beach front. The natural environment belongs to all of us, and we should all do our part to keep it free from litter.

"As Townsville locals we should all be proud of our city and our environment. Our city sits on the edge of one of the natural wonders of the world and it's up to us as the current custodians of the land to ensure it is protected."

"This Sunday's event will include refreshments and a native plant to take home as a thank you for taking part. We'll have clean up bags and gloves on site, so all you'll need to bring along is sun-safe clothing, enclosed shoes and a wide-brimmed hat."

Cr Soars said locals could also opt to register their own events for Clean Up Australia Day.

"Setting up your own event in your local park is easy, just jump onto the Clean Up Australia Day website and register your park," Cr Soars said.

"Even though there is only one Clean Up Australia Day each year, I hope locals choose to either run their own events throughout the year or make the choice to pick up litter that they see while they're walking their dog, taking their kids to the park, or just enjoying the outdoors."

Council's Clean Up Australia Day will be held this Sunday 05 March from 8am to 10am at Bushland Beach Park.
