The Albanese Government is taking another step towards achieving our ambitious target to protect and conserve 30 per cent of our land and 30 per cent of our oceans by 2030.
Close to 25 per cent of Australia's total landmass is now protected but we need an additional 39 million hectares of land to meet the 30 by 30 land target. It is important that this additional land is in areas that supports significant biodiversity outcomes.
In March this year, the Albanese Government announced the Australian Bushland Program, investing $250 million to boost conservation and protect more land.
A Request for Information (RFI) seeking views on the design of the strategic land purchase component of the Australian Bushland Program is now open for response.
The Albanese Government is seeking feedback from potential partners interested in working together to voluntarily purchase and protect properties with high biodiversity value.
Minister for the Environment and Water, Murray Watt said this component will play an important role in helping reach our 30 by 30 land target.
"We particularly want to hear from government and non-government organisations with experience in purchasing, protecting and managing land to deliver biodiversity and conservation outcomes," Minister Watt said.
"Following this feedback, we will finalise our program design, and from next year we'll be working with purchasing partners to secure and protect our most important land for biodiversity. This Request for Information is a first step to determine how we can do this most effectively.
