Moira Shire Council is inviting the community to have their say as Council begins the review of the Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAM Plan).

The Plan is a four-year strategy that outlines how Council manages dogs and cats within the Shire. It sets the direction for promoting responsible pet ownership, reducing risks to the community, supporting animal welfare, and ensuring compliance with the Domestic Animals Act 1994.

The way domestic animals are managed in public and private spaces impacts the safety, health, and wellbeing of everyone in Moira Shire.

Council's Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said responsible pet ownership was an important issue for everyone – not just pet owners.

"Whether it's ensuring pets are registered and microchipped, keeping cats safely at home, or picking up after your dog, responsible pet ownership plays a vital role in community safety and wellbeing."

"Every domestic animal deserves a safe and loving home. This plan will help Council work with the community to create the right balance of education, support, and regulation."

The first round of engagement focuses on gathering community ideas, opinions, and feedback to help shape the draft plan. Residents are invited to share what's working well, identify current challenges, and suggest where more education or support may be needed.

Community members can provide feedback online by completing the survey at Moira Matters or speaking with Council's Customer Experience Team for assistance.

The consultation is open from 14 April to 12 May 2025. https://www.moiramatters.com.au/DAM-plan-consultation
