We are inviting suggestions for new products to be considered for inclusion in the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme.
Products currently covered by the WELS scheme
The WELS scheme currently regulates:
- taps
- showers
- toilets
- urinals
- washing machines including washer-dryers
- dishwashers
- flow controllers.
Expanding the scheme to include more types of products will help save more water across the country.
Making a real difference
In 2026, the WELS scheme is expected to save an estimated 219 gigalitres of water nationwide. That's enough to fill 87,600 Olympic swimming pools and is around 22 litres of water saved per person, every day.
Saving water also helps reduce household costs. In 2026, Australians are expected to save more than $1.6 billion on their water and energy bills because of the WELS scheme. That's around $232 per year for a 4-person household.
Benefits for industry
The WELS label helps manufacturers and suppliers showcase the water efficiency performance of their products.
More than 80% of Australians recognise the WELS label and use it when choosing water efficient products. The WELS label makes it easy for consumers to compare water efficiency and choose the products that best fit their needs.
