Moira Shire Council is doing its part to be ready for a potentially challenging fire season.
Council crews are busy slashing roadsides, while Municipal Fire Prevention Officers are out and about across Moira Shire inspecting properties - all to help reduce fire risk this season.
The CFA says this year's fire season has started two weeks earlier than the beginning of the 2025/26 season, with the first Fire Danger Period already declared in parts of south-east Victoria.
Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM has joined the CFA in urging residents to be prepared for a high-risk summer.
"We're being proactive by undertaking roadside slashing and inspections to identify fire hazards. We also held a Green Waste Amnesty to support residents in clearing their properties," Dr Emonson said.
"Council has brought forward portions of its roadside slashing program due to the potential for the Fire Danger Period commencing earlier than usual this season.
"Roadside slashing efforts will predominantly focus on Council's sealed road network, with works extending to the unsealed road network where weather and ground conditions permit."
Meanwhile, Municipal Fire Prevention Officers are inspecting properties across Moira Shire to help reduce fire risk.
Officers will also respond to complaints to identify fire hazards on properties.
Landowners may receive a Fire Prevention Notice, directing them to slash blocks, create firebreaks, clear undergrowth and remove flammable materials from their land. There are significant penalties for failing to comply with a Fire Prevention Notice.
"If you own or manage land, now is a great time to mow long grass, clear dry vegetation, clean gutters and tidy up around buildings," Dr Emonson said.
"Getting fire-ready early helps keep you, your neighbours and your community safer."
