The Australian Heritage Council (AHC) is currently assessing the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade route.
Preliminary assessment has taken place indicating the site's potential National Heritage values. This means it has potential to be added to our National Heritage List. We are inviting you to have your say on the potential National Heritage values.
Beyond the glitz and glamour of the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, the site has a rich history. In 1978 the first parade took place along with various protests. This resulted in an enduring annual celebration of queer community and culture.
Our National Heritage places capture the achievements, joys, and sorrows of Australians. Inclusion in the National Heritage List is the highest heritage honour in Australia. Places on the list have 'outstanding heritage value'.
The AHC assesses places against set criteria. This is to see if they are of outstanding significance to the nation.
After the submission period, the AHC will advise the Minister on the potential National Heritage values of the Route.
The Minister will consider the AHC's report, which will include your submissions.
The Minister will then decide whether to include the place in the National Heritage List.
