High Range Drink Driving - Alice Springs

A 51-year-old man has been arrested and charged in relation to high range drink driving offence in Alice Springs today

Around 9am Officers were conducting a traffic campaign on the corner of Todd Street and Gregory Terrace when the driver failed to stop at the stop sign, Northern Territory Police say.

Officers apprehended the driver, who provided a breath alcohol reading of .179per cent.

The man was charged with one count of High Range Drink Driving, Driving Unregistered, Driving Unlicensed, Driving Whilst Disqualified, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign and Driving with an Unrestrained Child in the vehicle.

Acting Sergeant Ivan Petrovic said the incident in itself was bewildering to officers.

"In this instance the driver was three times over the legal blood alcohol limit.

"It is unbelievable that an individual can consider themselves safe to drive and maintain control of a vehicle when they fail to acknowledge a basic road rule of stopping at a stop sign.

"This is the second incident within the week in which we’ve stopped vehicles and found drunk drivers behind the wheel and unrestrained children as young as 1-years-old within the vehicle," said A/Sgt Petrovic

A driver was issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice after they were found driving unregistered and with an unrestrained child in the vehicle yesterday.

Around 1:54pm Members of the Southern Traffic Operations stopped the vehicle on Larapinta Drive and observed the passengers attempting to conceal a 1-year-old child in the rear-passenger foot well.

"These people are risking the lives of young children who are not properly restrained in the appropriate child seats.

"We don’t want or need to be traumatised by attending fatalities involving children due to negligent drivers," said A/Sgt Petrovic
