High Speed Driver Detected – Bass Highway Westbury, TAS

Police yesterday issued a 39-year-old NSW man with a high speed infringement notice after he was intercepted driving at 180km/h in a 110km/h speed zone, Tasmania Police say.

Traffic officers were conducting patrols on the Bass Highway in the Westbury area when a Holden sedan overtook police travelling at high speed.

With speed one of the Fatal Five contributing factors to serious and fatal crashes, police are concerned that motorists continue to drive at excessive speed on Tasmanian roads.

"Drivers travelling at high speeds such as these have no ability to stop safely should there be a hazard on the road," said Sergeant Bishop.

"If an issue were to occur with a vehicle travelling at such high speeds there is a very high potential that a serious or fatal crash would result."
