Historical armed robbery charge in Sandgate, QLD

Police have today charged a 54-year-old man in relation to the armed robbery of a bank in Sandgate more than 25 years ago, Queensland Police say.

Detectives from Carseldine Criminal Investigation Branch charged the man this morning following a review into the case of the bank robbery on Brighton Road on December 18, 1991.

It will be alleged around 11.45am, a man entered the bank wearing a balaclava before producing a firearm, jumping the counter and stealing a large sum of cash.

He allegedly fled the scene in a stolen vehicle.

Utilising modern investigative techniques and as a result of a forensic and evidentiary review, the Northgate man was subsequently charged with one count each of armed robbery and unlawful use of motor vehicle.

He is expected to appear in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court today.
