Historical Kidnapping Charges At Mount Isa

Mount Isa police have charged a Townsville man over the 1992 abduction of a woman in outback Queensland.

On June 24, 1992, police will allege two men abducted the then 23-year-old woman after flagging her down on a remote section of the Flinders Highway near Maxwelton in north-west Queensland.

On May 16 this year, police charged a 66-year-old Garbutt man with two counts of robbery, and one count each of kidnapping for ransom, deprivation of liberty and unlawful use of a motor vehicle in relation to the 1992 alleged abduction.

He appeared in Townsville Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody to re-appear on July 23.

Police had earlier charged one of the men on April 23, 1996, with multiple offences relating to the 1992 incident including deprivation of liberty and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
