History Double Delves Deeper Into Old Dubbo Gaol's Past

This November the Old Dubbo Gaol will showcase some of its history, with two exciting events that will share stories of characters from the gaol's past.

On Saturday 7 November, author Rachel Franks and artist Michael Bourke will discuss their works on Robert 'Nosey Bob' Howard the travelling executioner.

The in-conversation event will be held at the Old Dubbo Gaol from 10am.

Nosey Bob was one of Australia's longest serving hangmen and inspired Rachel's book, The Uncommon Hangman, while Michael's current art exhibition on show at the Old Dubbo Gaol was inspired by the book.

Old Dubbo Gaol Coordinator Jane Bendall said, Michael and Rachel would be discussing everything from Nosey Bob himself, his interesting role as an executioner, the book The Uncommon Hangman and the art exhibition that portrays the travelling executioner.

Later in the month Macquarie Regional Library will then host Dubbo author and Old Dubbo Gaol Visitor Experience Officer, Chris Anemaat during an in-conversation with Jen Cowley to discusses his book Sandstone Heart: The History of Old Dubbo Gaol.

The event, on Friday 13 November 2026 from 2pm – 3pm, will share stories from the book including the captivating story of the gaol, exploring every facet of prison life - from notorious escapes and harsh punishments to the tragic tales of the eight hanged men and the daily challenges of life behind bars.

"The author talk will delve into the everyday realities of both the prisoners and their wardens as well as taking attendees behind-the-scenes into the creation of this book.

"If you enjoy local history these two events are a great opportunity to listen to people passionate about history and share in the stories from the Old Dubbo Gaol's past," Ms Bendall said.

These events are free to attend. For the author and artist talk at the Old Dubbo Gaol tickets can be secured for free at 123 tix for resident from the Dubbo Region. Proof of residency required. For visitors outside the Dubbo Region the purchase of admission is required.
