HKUST Welcomes New Council Appointments

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) welcomes the Chancellor's appointment of Prof. Patrick YEUNG Kai-cheung as the Vice-Chairman of the University Council, and Mr. Stephen YIU Kin-wah as the University Treasurer and Mr. Michael NGAI Ming-tak as a new Member on Council, all with effect from November 1, 2021.

Prof. Yeung is the Chief Executive Officer of Asian Capital who had assumed key positions in boards and committees of various tertiary institutions, professional bodies and non-profit organisations. He joined the HKUST Council in August 2016 as the Treasurer of the University and Chairman of the Finance Committee of Council. Council Chairman Mr. Andrew LIAO Cheung-sing welcomed Prof. Yeung's appointment. "Prof. Yeung has rich experience in financial management matters. He has supported the Council in formulating the necessary frameworks for the enhancement of financial governance of the University. I am confident that Prof. Yeung, in his new capacity, will continue to contribute to the Council by promoting good governance of the University, amongst others."

Mr. Yiu was the Chairman and Chief Executive officer of KPMG China and Hong Kong and a member of the executive committee and the board of KPMG International and KPMG Asia Pacific. He holds several key roles in public service including the Chairman of Audit Committee at the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing. Mr. Yiu had been appointed Vice-Chairman of the Finance Committee of Council and Chairman of the Main Tender Board of the University. Mr. Liao is glad to see the new appointment of Mr. Yiu and is confident that under Mr. Yiu's leadership, the Finance Committee would continue to support Council's work effectively, particularly in setting the University's financial strategies, reviewing its budget and financial statements, as well as overseeing investment matters of the University.

Mr. Ngai, who is currently the Chairman of The Red Group and was previously the Managing Director of UBS Investment Bank, is new to the University Council. He has a wealth of experience in international finance and had been serving on committees of other higher education institutions.

Finally, Mr. Liao would like to thank the outgoing Council Vice-Chairman Prof. John CHAI Yat-Chiu. Amongst his other contributions to the University, "Prof. Chai has contributed to enhance university governance in both the Clear Water Bay operations and HKUST(GZ). Through his support in design and development of different governance frameworks, and leadership in the Task Force on Review of Council Effectiveness under the Council, the awareness of good governance among the University community has been greatly enhanced.
