HMAS Stirling's Historic Double Triumph

Department of Defence

For the first time, a single base establishment, HMAS Stirling, has won both the Governor's Cup and the Duke of Gloucester Cup in the same year.

The Duke of Gloucester Cup is the Royal Australian Navy's most prestigious award, instituted in 1946 when Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, presented a silver cup as a prize for excellence in gunnery.

Over the decades, the meaning and relevance of the award has changed. It is now presented to the unit that excels in every dimension of what it means to be a warfighting force, including mission effectiveness, lethality, safety, reliability, efficiency, training and competency.

The Governor's Cup is awarded to the shore establishment that has excelled across every aspect of its operation, including safety, training and support to the fleet. It recognises the critical role of shore-based capability in enabling maritime operations, ensuring ships and boats are prepared for sea.

Governor of Western Australia Chris Dawson said winning both cups was remarkable.

"It speaks to the leadership of Captain Ken Burleigh and all sailors and personnel here at HMAS Stirling," Mr Dawson said.

"It is a resounding testament to the quality of the people and the standards that you strive for and uphold in this place.

"When historians look back at the Royal Australian Navy in this era, they will note that in a time of strategic complexity and rising demand, HMAS Stirling has stood tall.

"They will note that the people at this base, officers and sailors and civilians alike, have given their best when the best was needed."

'Being awarded the Gloucester and Governor's Cups is something that we can all be extremely proud of.'

It was the first time a base establishment has won the Gloucester Cup.

The achievement comes during a busy and significant period for Stirling, as the base progresses key AUKUS milestones and prepares for the implementation of Submarine Rotational Force West in 2027, when Stirling will become home to conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines.

Commanding Officer Stirling Captain Ken Burleigh said personnel in every part of Stirling played a role in the success.

"Your resilience, professionalism and determination have been exceptional," Captain Burleigh said.

"Being awarded the Gloucester and Governor's Cups is something that we can all be extremely proud of.

"Your achievement of being the first establishment to ever be awarded the Gloucester Cup will always be a great source of pride for me, as I hope that it will be for you."

Stirling continues to play a critical role in the Indo-Pacific, supporting the Chief of Navy's intent to optimise the fleet, accelerate the delivery of future capability, maximise safety, availability, lethality and preparedness, and contribute to the deterrence of conflict.
