  • Will Hodgman must rule out the closure of the TasTAFE campus in the Launceston CBD.

Shadow TAFE, University and Skills Minister, Michelle O'Byrne, said the proposal to consolidate the vocational education provider to Alanvale has been met with significant community concern.

"At a time when the Government has accepted the need to move the university into the city, it seems counterproductive to reduce TAFE city offerings," Ms O'Byrne said.

"There are extensive problems with the current infrastructure at the Alanvale campus which will need considerable investment to bring it up to standard and there's a genuine risk that course offerings will be reduced.

"Will Hodgman backed this proposal in Parliament today yet he has failed to consult with the community.

"He must also come clean on what he plans to do with the Launceston building.

"Under Will Hodgman's Government, TasTAFE has been plagued by course cancellations and delays, chronic staff shortages and inadequate infrastructure.

"Tasmania has lost 5,600 full time jobs in the past year and has a youth unemployment rate of 13.7 per cent.

"Given these appalling statistics, northern Tasmania needs a strong investment in TAFE infrastructure including maintaining the city campus.

"Instead of postponing, cancelling and under-resourcing trades and traineeships, the Government must fully commit to a full range of courses in the north."
