Homemade Bike Jumps On Public Land Are Safety Risk

Council is reminding community members that homemade bike jumps constructed on public land pose a significant risk to both riders and users of shared community spaces.

"Homemade bike jumps are often unstable, uneven or poorly constructed increasing the risk of severe injury to users," Council's Manager of Services and Operations Dave Thornburg said.

Council acknowledges the removal of unauthorised jumps may be disappointing to those who have built them. However, Council has received direct feedback from community members with concerns about homemade bike jumps in public spaces, and community safety remains the highest priority.

"We understand it's fun to build and use your own bike jumps however, if they're built on public land Council has a responsibility to remove unauthorised bike jumps that pose safety risks to the wider community," Mr Thornburg said.

"Colac Otway's public spaces are designed and maintained to ensure they are safe and enjoyable for everyone and illegal bike jumps pose an unacceptable risk to that safety."

Council is awaiting the outcome of a Victorian Government funding application to support the construction of a bike park in Colac. The project was developed in response to strong community demand with extensive local engagement undertaken to shape the design.
