Hoon driving targeted in traffic operation in Shoalhaven

Several drivers have received various traffic infringements following an operation targeting hoon driving and vehicle compliance in the Shoalhaven area, NSW Police say.

From Thursday 14 October 2016 until Sunday 16 October 2016, officers attached to Shoalhaven Traffic and Highway Patrol with assistance from Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) targeted areas in Sanctuary Point, Huskinsson, St Georges Basin and Sussex Inlet.

Shoalhaven Local Area Command’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Inspector David Cockram said the operation was aimed at reducing road trauma.

"The operation aims to enforce the rules of the road and ensure drivers follow them accordingly, whether this is speeding, mobile phone usage, drink/drug driving or hoon driving," he said.

"Vehicle compliance allows us to keep our roads safe by taking defective cars off the road. We are committed to making NSW roads safe, as such this will be an ongoing operation," Inspector Cockram said.

Results from the operation included:

  • 126 x random breath tests with four people being charged with medium and low range PCA.
  • 26 x mobile drug tests with six drivers returning positive samples
  • 46 x traffic infringement notices
  • 5 x exceed speed limit
  • 1 x burnout with the driver’s licence suspended
  • 3 x unlicensed drivers
  • 9 x registered/uninsured drivers
  • 1 x unaccompanied learner
  • 11 x defect notices issued with eight cars having major defects
  • 1 x police pursuit which was terminated due to safety concerns

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
