Hornsby Council's Autumn Native Plant Giveaway Returns

Hornsby Shire Council

Hornsby Shire Council is once again welcoming the return of its popular Native Plant Giveaway Program this March, inviting all residents of Hornsby Shire to participate and nurture their local environment by booking an appointment to collect four free native plants.

Taking place at Council's Warada Ngurang Community Nursery in Pennant Hills on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 March, residents can select plants from a great variety of grasses, groundcovers, shrubs, climbers and various-sized trees — all cultivated by dedicated volunteers and staff at the nursery.

Attendees to the plant giveaways can also make use of the expertise of Council's staff and volunteers on the day as they help by making suggestions of the best plant species to meet everyone's needs. Information about each species on offer will also be displayed on handy posters, so you can choose plants that will suit the growing conditions in your garden as well as the size of plant and features you desire.

During the previous Native Plant Giveaways event, held in Spring of 2023, residents from over 800 households collected approximately 3500 plants — statistics that Hornsby Shire Mayor The Hon Philip Ruddock AO says are testament to the continued popularity of the program.

"We've been holding our native plant giveaways for a number of years now and have seen them really flourish over time," said Mayor Ruddock.

"I think this is due in part to the real sense of community that emerges at these events. The incredible skill and devotion of our nursery volunteers in on display, our residents' passion and enthusiasm for native plants really shines and the hard work of Council staff brings it all together. I couldn't be more proud of everyone involved and am very excited for the program to return this autumn."
