Tennant Creek Police have arrested a 26-year-old man in regards to a fire that destroyed a property overnight, Northern Territory Police say.
Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Services responded to a report of a structure fire on the corner of South and Thompson Street around 9.50pm.
Officer in Charge of the Tennant Creek Fire and Rescue Station, Tex Tourell said the blaze destroyed the home, three sheds, four caravans and three cars.
"By the time we arrived on scene, the fire had spread to an outside structure adjacent to the main house. We conducted a search of the house and thankfully it was vacant, but due to the intensity of the fire and venting of multiple LPG cylinders in the area, fire crews were forced to fight the fire from the street.
"This is a timely reminder to everyone to ensure they have fire-proofed their property. Something that starts as a grass fire can quickly run into unmaintained yards and destroyed structures.
"The premises did not have working smoke detectors installed, which may have raised the alarm earlier."
Detective Acting Sergeant of the Tennant Creek Investigation Unit, Karl Gundersen said the man is currently assisting police with their enquiries.
