Housing crisis goes from bad to worse

Tasmanian Labor

Housing Minister Michael Ferguson has revealed to Budget Estimates the extreme extent of Tasmania's housing crisis.

Shadow Housing Minister Ella Haddad said it was clear housing remained the lowest priority for this Liberal Government.

"Today, Minister Ferguson admitted that in the year 2019/20, there were 15,600 times that Tasmanians were turned away from emergency shelters across the state," Ms Haddad said.

"This is a simply breathtaking number, and as the housing waitlist blows out beyond 4,000 it is clear not enough is being done to fix the catastrophic crisis our state is in."

Ms Haddad said Minister Ferguson was following in the footsteps of failed former Housing Minister Roger Jaensch.

"The legacy of this government will be its lack of action in housing.

"Minister Ferguson has taken the torch from Minister Jaensch and continued the legacy of ensuring housing is not a priority for this government.

"While Tasmanians continue to find it more and more challenging to put a roof over their head, this government fails to act.

"Minister Ferguson needs to take real action to fix the Housing crisis, another year of talking will get us nowhere."
