How Locals Can Help Shape Kiama's After‑dark Future

Kiama Council

Kiama at night.

From early evening catch-ups to night-time entertainment and culture, dining and events, Kiama Municipal Council wants your ideas to help shape a more vibrant and enjoyable after-dark experience across our towns and villages.
Council is inviting you to have your say on Kiama After Dark, a Night‑Time Economy Strategy exploring how we come alive in the late afternoon, evening and night.
The engagement process is now open and Council is encouraging local residents to let us know what's already working, what could be done even better, and what you'd love to see when the sun goes down.
Mayor Cameron McDonald said Kiama After Dark is about opening up conversations and possibilities.
"Our after-dark scene already includes passionate operators and much-loved local venues," Mayor McDonald said.
"Through Kiama After Dark, we'd like to understand how our existing strengths can be supported, and where there may be opportunities to grow or improve, in ways that suit our community."
Listening first
This first stage of Kiama After Dark is about listening, learning and understanding.
Council is seeking feedback on:
  • How vibrant the Kiama LGA feels after dark today
  • When different types of after-dark activity feel most appropriate
  • Which places across the LGA are best suited to evening or night-time activity
  • What types of experiences people value and where gaps may exist
  • How safety, amenity, noise, accessibility and transport affect participation

Exploring opportunities
With funding from the NSW Government, Council is developing a Night-Time Economy Strategy aligned with the State's 24-Hour Economy and Vibrancy Reforms.
The Strategy will explore how to:
  • Support local businesses, creatives and cultural activity after dark
  • Encourage appropriate evening and night-time use across different areas
  • Balance vibrancy with safety, wellbeing and residential amenity
  • Ensure after-dark activity reflects Kiama's distinctive village character
Council has emphasised that a successful after-dark economy is a shared effort.
