The history of the Australian designed and developed Ikara anti-submarine missile will soon be published by the Naval Historical Society. It is at the final manuscript proofing stage before launch in mid-2021.

The book traces the story of Ikara from concept development to feasibility study in 1959 through to approval, design, production and service ending in 1991.

The history of the Ikara missile is a case study which demonstrates the ability of Australia's Government, Defence Department, research laboratories and Defence industry to work together to develop a state of the art weapon system.

The Ikara history demonstrates clearly that Australia had the ability to be self-reliant in the development of world class precision weapons in the past. The book will be essential reading for all stakeholders who become involved in the Government's new enterprise.

Gaining an understanding of how Australia achieved success in the past and avoided pitfalls with the Ikara system will assist all stakeholders in future missile and guided weapons manufacturing in Australia.

A proof copy of the Ikara: Australia's Cold War Wonder Weapon will be available for those wishing to review the book.
