Impaired drivers to be targeted as Operation Drink Drive II begins

Motorists are being warned not to drink and drive as a three-day operation intensively targeting impaired drivers begins across the state.

Operation Drink Drive II commenced at 12.01am today (Friday 1 November 2019) and concludes at 11.59pm on Sunday (3 November 2019).

The operation will target dangerous driver behaviour including drink/drug driving, fatigue, occupant restraints and speeding, in an effort to reduce road trauma.

During the corresponding operation in 2018, police charged 468 people with drink driving offences. A total of 2887 people were detected speeding and 265 were detected using their mobile phones.

Police will bring the same presence to the state again this weekend, following on from what has already been a tragic year on NSW roads with 290 crashes resulting in 310 fatalities since 1 January 2019.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, said there was no excuse to drink and drive.

"The majority of people do the right thing, but to the minority of motorists who think it is acceptable to put their own life and the lives of others at risk by drink driving, speeding or using a mobile phone behind the wheel - expect to be caught," Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.

"This weekend in particular we will be targeting those rural roads where you normally wouldn't expect to see highway patrol vehicles. We will saturate the state with police presence and catch those offenders who continue to do the wrong thing.

"If you're planning on having a drink this weekend, make sure you have a Plan B to get yourself and your passengers home safely."
