Improving walking and cycling options in City of Whittlesea

Providing safer walking and cycling options and increasing the levels of participation in active travel are just some of the key priorities outlined in a new plan endorsed at the Council Meeting on Monday 19 September.

The City of Whittlesea's Walking and Cycling Plan 2022-2027 will guide improvements and actions over the next five years across the municipality to create safer and more accessible walking and cycling opportunities for our community.

Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said the plan has been developed following extensive community consultation earlier in the year.

"We received over 130 submissions on our draft plan, and the feedback showed our community want Council to expand on the existing walking and cycling network and create safe, comfortable and accessible paths and trails," Ms Wilson said.

"Other key themes that emerged from the consultation included connecting missing links in current routes, the need for safe crossings at busy streets, as well as addressing factors that might limit participation in walking and cycling such as a lack of shade and inadequate lighting."

"Our Walking and Cycling Plan addresses these themes through a list of priority actions and projects that will make walking and cycling safer and encourage more active travel by delivering a high-quality path and trail network throughout the City of Whittlesea."

"We're keen to get more people out and about to walk and cycle, both for recreation but also as a mode of transport. We know that by doing this, we will increase the health and wellbeing of our community, while also improving environmental outcomes such as a reduction in traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions."
