Increased Landcare funding will help farmers, volunteers and environment

Guy Barnett,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

The Hodgman Liberal Government has doubled its funding to Landcare Tasmania, with almost $1 million dedicated to support the coordination of grassroots Landcare groups over the next four years.

This Government is a strong supporter of Landcare Tasmania and recognises the valuable work of their members in Tasmania's unique natural environment. To ensure this good work continues, we have doubled the funding for Landcare Tasmania to $960,000 over four years from 2018/19.

Landcare's work supports our environment, our agricultural sector and primary producers, and other important industries like tourism.

The additional funding will ensure continued support to the thousands of Landcare volunteers across the state who give their time to helping sustain our productive farm land, rivers, biodiversity and other natural resources.

Today I visited the Quamby Bend Landcare group to see the work they have been doing to remove willows and restore a stretch of the Meander River.

This work not only improves local soil and catchment health, but also provides flow-on benefits to Tasmania's national and international reputation for growing premium produce.

Today's announcement follows the Government's increased funding of $4.2 million over 4 years to Natural Resource Management (NRM) and the $2 million Landcare Action Grants Program.
