Independent Costings Extended To One Nation

The One Nation Party will have access to the independent Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) for the March 2027 election.

The New South Wales Parliament has amended legislation that will see Labor, the Liberal & National parties and One Nation have the same ability to submit election promises to the PBO for costing.

Each party leader can submit an unlimited number of proposals for examination.

This scrutiny will provide voters with valuable independent analysis about the potential financial impacts of each party's policies.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer will produce a budget impact statement for each party prior to ballots opening.

The amendments passed by the Parliament recognise the prospect that these three parties will be competing to form the next state government.

The changes also reflect concerns previously raised by One Nation that the party would be unable to access public resources to complete costings.

Minor parties and sitting eligible independent MPs will be permitted to submit two policies each for costing.

Dr Michael Warlters, an economist with more than 35 years of experience across infrastructure, revenue forecasting and macroeconomic policy, has been appointed the Parliamentary Budget Officer.

Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said:

"With the upcoming election to be contested in difficult economic conditions, independent advice is more valuable than ever.

"Voters deserve to know what impact election promises could have on both the State Budget and their household budget.

"Expert scrutiny and transparency are not things to shy away from. They make for a more informed public debate and can only add to the contest of ideas.
