Last week, the United States and the Government of Indonesia met at the Pentagon for the 19th annual Indonesia-United States Security Dialogue (IUSSD). The delegations were led by Lindsey Ford, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for South and Southeast Asia for the United States Department of Defense, and Major General Rodon Pedrason, Director General of Defence Strategy for the Indonesian Ministry of Defense. The IUSSD is an annual meeting to review bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and global security issues.
The delegations affirmed the enduring nature of the U.S.-Indonesia strategic partnership as well as their shared desire to promote the security, stability, and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific, and to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation. Participants welcomed the strong pace of high-level meetings between the two countries, including a November 1 meeting between President Biden and President Jokowi and a November 20 meeting between Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Minister Prabowo Subianto.
The delegations agreed to advance a number of initiatives that will deepen the bilateral partnership to address new and emerging challenges. Initiatives include expanding the size, scope and jointness of bilateral exercises; enhancing collaboration on maritime domain awareness and other maritime capacity-building initiatives; strengthening bilateral cyber security cooperation; collaborating on human capital development and education; and working together to address the security implications of climate change.
DASD Ford and Major General Rodon closed the meeting by reiterating their commitment to further building the bilateral strategic partnership based on a shared foundation of common interests and values. Indonesia agreed to host the 20th IUSSD in Jakarta in 2022.
