The Property Council of Australia today welcomed the ACT Government's call for cross-party support to progress the new Canberra Convention and Entertainment Centre, hailing it as an important city-shaping opportunity to boost jobs, attract visitors and support economic growth.
Property Council ACT & Capital Region Executive Director, Ashlee Berry, said the commitment to get the project to shovel-ready status is a step in the right direction - but stressed that success will depend on city-wide planning to unlock surrounding precinct development and investment.
"A new convention and entertainment precinct is long overdue for Canberra - it's great to see this project moving forward with Federal and ACT Government backing," Ms Berry said.
"The announcement delivers on one of the key priorities we set out in our Pre-Budget Submission, calling for continued progress on the Canberra Convention and Entertainment Precinct.
"This precinct has the potential to transform the city centre, stimulate new private investment, and support a thriving tourism, events, and hospitality sector.
"We welcome the ACT and Federal Governments' partnership to advance planning and design for this long-overdue project - a project we've championed as essential to growing Canberra's events economy and positioning our city as a world-class destination.
"But this project won't reach its full potential unless it's backed by a clear precinct strategy that connects transport, accommodation, hospitality, and retail opportunities - and delivers certainty for investors."
Ms Berry said the Property Council had long advocated for an integrated city strategy that leverages major projects like the convention centre to unlock wider benefits for Canberrans.
"Canberra needs a bold and connected city vision - one that brings together planning, infrastructure, and investment to deliver a vibrant, 24-hour city centre," Ms Berry said.
"We look forward to working with the ACT Government to shape the precinct, attract investment, and ensure this once-in-a-generation project delivers lasting benefits for the whole city."
