Infrastructure spend to drop under Liberals

Tasmanian Labor
  • Treasurer lies about spend reduction and should correct record
  • Infrastructure budget falls by $83 million in 2020-21 alone
  • Gutwein has lost his economic credibility
  • The Liberals are slashing infrastructure spending and lying about it to the Tasmanian people.

Today Treasurer Peter Gutwein misled Parliament and the Tasmanian people by claiming infrastructure spending would increase over the forward estimates.

The Liberals are driving the state into hundreds of millions in net debt and have tried to claim this is due to record investment in infrastructure.

However, page 4 of the Revised Estimates Report lays out in black and white that Peter Gutwein is actually cutting spending.

"The Revised Estimates Report shows spending on infrastructure will fall by $83 million in 2020-21 and a further $50 million in 2021-22," Shadow Minister for Infrastructure David O'Byrne said.

"This is another example of how Treasurer Gutwein has lost his economic credibility. Today he lied to the Parliament about his reduction in infrastructure spending and should correct the record.

"Treasurer Gutwein has made these cuts and we have not heard a peep out of Infrastructure Minister Jeremy Rockliff.

"Infrastructure is just not a Liberal priority - they're slashing the budget and it is little wonder they have already had to delay releasing their 30-year infrastructure strategy three times.

"Tasmanians driving on unsafe roads or putting up with huge delays in traffic congestion can lay the blame at the feet of Treasurer Gutwein and Minister Rockliff for failing to invest and then lying about it."
