Tasmania Police continue to provide a presence at Hobart Airport. Part of their duties with Biosecurity Tasmania Officers is to monitor all people at the airport, to ensure that they adhere to the direction made by the Director of Public Health in relation to the mandatory wearing of face masks.
The direction to wear a face mask includes all people arriving into Tasmania, during departure and includes the terminal building and carpark areas within the Hobart Airport precinct.
On Saturday 30 January 2021, a 49 year old man from Melbourne was issued with an infringement notice for entering the Hobart Airport terminal on two separate occasions while not wearing a face mask. He had been instructed to do so by Biosecurity and Tasmania Police Officers, he was fined $1548.
On Monday 1 February 2021, a 25 year old man from New South Wales arrived in Tasmania and refused to wear a mask when directed to do so by a Police Officer, stating he had an exemption on medical grounds. He was unable to provide a written medical exemption issued by a medical practitioner and was issued with an infringement notice for failing to comply with a direction of the Director of Public Health, his fine was $774.
Inspector Brian Edmonds said, "The direction to wear face masks was made to protect travellers and the community from the risk of transmission of Covid-19. Tasmania Police urge all travellers to comply with the direction in the interest of public safety."
