Inmate charged after contraband investigation at correctional centre in Sydney's north-west

An inmate has been charged as part of an ongoing investigation into the trafficking of contraband at a correctional facility in Sydney's north-west.

In March this year, police received information that an inmate at a correctional facility in Parklea was in possession of contraband, including a mobile phone.

On Wednesday 25 March 2020, correctional staff conducted a search of the man's cell and seized a mobile phone, charger, cables and SIM cards.

Tobacco, steroids, food items, designer clothing and a sandwich maker were also seized.

As a result, detectives from the Corrective Services Investigation Unit established Strike Force Bundawarrah to investigate the trafficking of contraband at the facility and reports of corrupt activity by a male correctional officer.

Following extensive investigations, detectives charged a 26-year-old man, who is a correctional officer, on Sunday (19 April 2020). He remains before the courts.

About 9am today (Wednesday 22 April 2020), strike force detectives escorted a 31-year-old inmate to Riverstone Police Station where he was charged with three counts of use or possess mobile phone/part etc in place of detention.

The man was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Blacktown Local Court on Monday 17 August 2020.

Investigations under Strike Force Bundawarrah continuing and further charges are expected to be laid.
