Inmate Charged After Fatal Stabbing At Wellington

A man has been charged over an alleged fatal stabbing of an inmate at a correctional facility in the state's west.

About 3.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 7 May 2026) police were called to a correctional facility on Goolma Road, Wellington, following reports an inmate had been stabbed.

A 25-year-old man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Orange Hospital in a critical condition.

A second man – aged 26 – was charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

About 10am today (Thursday 7 May 2026), police were informed the injured man has died in the hospital and the second man was additionally charged with murder.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 4 today (Thursday 7 May 2026) where he was refused bail to appear at Dubbo Local Court on Thursday 2 July 2026.

A crime scene has been established and detectives from Orana Mid-Western Police District commenced an investigation under Strike Force Rilka.

A report to be prepared for the information of the coroner.
