Inner West Council has announced a major cultural milestone at White Bay Power Station, unveiling its full Inner West-led program for the 25th Biennale of Sydney, Re-Memory.

After years of advocacy from Council to transform the White Bay Power Station into a leading arts and culture precinct, the 2026 Biennale marks a significant next step in bringing the venue to life.

The event will turn the former industrial site into one of Australia's largest and most ambitious contemporary art spaces, placing Inner West artists at the heart of this iconic event.

Mayor Darcy Byrne said the program reflects the long-term vision Council has fought for.

"White Bay Power Station has always been about more than preserving a building — it's about opening up one of Sydney's most significant sites for public life, creativity and culture," Mayor Byrne said.

"We started our partnership with The Biennale of Sydney in 2024 with huge success. Our 2026 program is the next step in that journey. It ensures this extraordinary space is activated by artists, stories and communities from the Inner West."

Inner West Council has entered into a formal partnership with the Biennale of Sydney to expand the festival's program at White Bay, with a focus on commissioning new work, and curating programs that feature local Inner West artists, performers and creative communities.

"The Inner West is home to one of the most concentrated creative communities in the country," Mayor Byrne said. "We are the beating heart and soul of Sydney's arts scene."

"This partnership is about backing that talent — giving local artists the space, resources and international exposure they deserve, while strengthening White Bay's role as a major cultural destination."

The Inner West program draws together emerging and established practitioners—including performers, dancers, designers, musicians, puppeteers and storytellers—many presenting newly commissioned works developed through Council's Working Memory program.

Deputy Mayor Chloe Smith said the program reflects both the creative depth and inclusivity of the area.

"The arts are integral to the diversity and vibrancy of the Inner West and this program reflects that strong local identity. The partnership takes that to the next level and places our local artists centre stage at Sydney's best new cultural venue – all right here in the Inner West."
