Inner West is leading the way with practical support for families experiencing domestic violence.
Our early learning centres provide priority access to all children of women residing in domestic violence refuges within the Inner West.
Domestic violence refuges in our local area provide essential emergency accommodation and support for women and children fleeing violence.
Access to quality early childhood education can provide stability and support for children experiencing domestic violence trauma, while enabling their mothers to access essential services, legal support, employment and study.
Council already has provisions to waive enrolment bonds, waiting list fees and establish affordable payment plans depending on family circumstances.
"This priority pathway builds on our already significant support for women and children living in Inner West refuges," said Councillor Jo Carlisle. "We know that offering this support and continuity for children is critical to their futures and lifelong learning.
"We will also be supporting our early learning staff in ongoing professional development in trauma-informed practice, to ensure that the care and support these children receive at our Inner West early learning centres is best practice," Clr Carlisle added.
Council's centres, including outside school hours care, preschool and long day care, currently receive referrals through formal and informal pathways including local women's refuges and other community organisations, the Department of Communities and Justice, police, word of mouth, relatives and extended family.
Depending on confidentiality requirements and any relevant court orders, Centre Directors and senior staff customise assistance for vulnerable children and their parents/care givers.
