Innovative Darwin Battery Project to Reduce Carbon Emissions

Carbon emissions fromthe Darwin Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilitys power generation are set tobe reduced by 20 per cent thanks to a world-first innovative battery project.

ConocoPhillips Australia, as operator of Darwin LNG, will invest in the state-of-the-artbattery project, which will enable existingturbines to run at maximum efficiency and remove the need to run an additionalturbine.

Darwin LNG will become the worlds first LNG plant to install a batteryto reduce emissions, saving thousands of tonnes of fuel gas and reducingmaintenance costs.

The battery also has significant potential to integrate with otheropportunities currently being considered by Darwin LNG to increase energyefficiency and reduce emissions such as alternative energy generation.

Minister forPrimary Industry and Resources, Paul Kirby, will speak about the project whenattending the Australian Petroleum Productionand Exploration Association (APPEA) conference in Brisbane this week.

Minister Kirbywill lead a Northern Territory Delegation to the conference to promote theNorthern Territory as a gas supply and service hub, particularly for offshoreand onshore exploration and developments.

As stated by Minister for Primary Industry andResources, Paul Kirby:

The battery project continues Darwin LNGs record ofinnovation and leadership in carbon management.

Its pleasing to see ConocoPhillipsAustralia not only providing jobs for Territorians, but also committing toreducing carbon emissions.

TheAPPEA event represents an important opportunity to promote the development ofthe Territorys petroleum industry both offshore and onshore, in particular, exploration, development and associated supply and service.

As stated by ConocoPhillipsAustralia West President, Chris Wilson:

Darwin LNG has been an industry leader in environmental performance andcarbon management for over a decade.

ConocoPhillips is taking action on Climate Change led by a globalcommitment to reduce the Green House Gas intensity of its operations by five to15 per cent by 2030.
