Innovative recruitment approach gets people into jobs in Adelaide

A collaboration between the Department of Education, Skills and Employment and Datacom has helped job seekers in Adelaide secure work in the company's new contact centre, with hundreds more opportunities up for grabs.

When the department showcased its New Employment Services to Employers during a workshop, Datacom realised it could help them recruit staff for its new 650 seat contact centre in Noarlunga in Adelaide South, due to open in September 2020.

Datacom was already working with jobactive providers in Adelaide but were keen to reach as many suitable applicants as they could in the online employment services. The department worked closely with Datacom to tailor a recruitment approach to target job-ready people with skills and experience in customer service.

The department's Adelaide-based Employment Liaison Officer, Sharon Clarke, said they knew that tapping into digital opportunities could help businesses like Datacom get the workers they needed.

"Due to COVID-19 the digital service caseload was growing and we saw an opportunity to work with Datacom to promote their current employment opportunities in SA," Sharon said.

"We included a virtual information session for job seekers to speak with Datacom. We had really good attendance and job seekers asked some well thought-out questions."

Data matching helped select 2,000 potentially suitable job seekers to receive information about the jobs at Datacom. They were then invited to attend a virtual information session to get a better understanding of the jobs and Datacom's requirements.

Interested job seekers were then invited to apply for a position through the Australian Government's Jobs Hub, which helps connect job seekers and employers in a rapidly changing jobs market.

Already, 12 people have got jobs with the company, and more job offers are expected as the first recruitment round progresses.

Datacom was so impressed with the support it received that it has asked to approach a second round of job seekers in digital services to help fill 240 remaining positions in Noarlunga and more than 100 positions at its Modbury site.

The department will use what it learns through the collaboration to inform the development of an employer-focused system for the New Employment Services Model, beginning in 2022.
